Libreros y editores escoceses. Aprendiz de un librero en Escocia a la edad de 11 años, Daniel trabajó de 1837 a 1843 para libreros en Londres. En 1843, él y su hermano Alexander fundaron Macmillan & Co., una próspera librería en Cambridge, que empezó publicando textos de enseñanza en 1844 y novelas en 1855. Después del fallecimiento de Daniel, Alexander amplió el catálogo de la empresa y fundó
Macmillan's Magazine (1859–1907), un periódico literario, y a partir de 1869
